Consciousness, like water
has an intelligence. Water flows downward, towards gravity, and in its embodiment of that single intention, that law of attraction, it always finds and takes the path of least resistance. So if water is flowing down a mountain, it finds and takes the easiest path, taking advantage of gullies and ravines, flowing around boulders, floating random pieces of wood and sweeping them to the side.
The intention of water is an interactive intelligence, it relies on the mountain to furnish it with obstacles and opportunities, problems to solve. Without these water is dumb. Water in a glass dish evaporates; in a closed bottle it just sits there.
Consciousness also has an intelligence, also takes the path of least resistance. However instead of flowing downwards towards gravity, it flows upwards, towards levity. Levity is a force like gravity that works as a strange attractor upon consciousness.
The intelligence of consciousness is also interactive. It also requires obstacles and opportunities to find its way through. And it needs something else too; it needs embodiment. Without embodiment in a living being, consciousness, like water in a bottle just sits there.
Ego and Self
In its downward intention, water is like ego. It is separative, competitive, ultimately destructive, ultimately consuming without giving back. In it’s upwards intention, consciousness is like Self. It is insubstantial, the essence of lightness; yet it is real and is a transformational force to be reckoned with.
So there are two forces at work in the human psyche ego and Self or consciousness. One is attracted by the force of gravity, the other by the force of levity. One flows downward towards separateness, alienation and death. The other flows upwards towards healing, transformation and love – towards Oneness.
Which are we to join forces with, ego or the consciousness of Self? It is a choice; a choice we make ultimately and a choice we make at every moment. Whichever choice we make, the other is always there as well. If we choose consciousness, ego is always there to fall into. If we choose ego, consciousness is always there as a potential for transformation.
The middle way is to choose consciousness but recognize ego and give it its due. In order to transform – and thus transform others - we must survive, and that is the work of ego. Ego without consciousness is a dark and destructive force, a “me” without you, but consciousness without ego just sits there and does nothing. If ego is self-interest and consciousness is enlightenment, then choosing consciousness but aligning it with ego is enlightened self-interest - and that is where we want to be.
Choosing consciousness
How do we choose consciousness; what is the process?
We let go to it.
We let go of our death grip on individual survival; we untie the string fastening the helium balloon to the rock, and our consciousness begins to rise. However it only takes a moment of panic, a moment of greed, a moment of facing mortality or even just scarcity, and our consciousness crashes to the ground with a dull thud.
So we have to face all of that beforehand, before making the choice. We have to make the choice wisely; we have to make an informed choice. And what is the information that we need to make this informed choice? It is information about who we are, about our ultimate nature as consciousness itself, as well as information about the nature of consciousness.
Because if ultimately we are consciousness in a body, consciousness embodied - and we are - then information about the nature of our consciousness is information about the reality of who we are.
So what is this nature of consciousness; what is this reality that we are?
