Life and Faith

"Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how...We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark." — Agnes de Mille, dancer

Be impeccable with your word

Be impeccable with your word really means never use your power of your word against yourself. When your impeccable with your word, you never betray yourself.

Steve Jobs - He Dared Us to be Great
by Clint Watson

Dear Subscriber,

I'm sure you know by now that Steve Jobs has died. You can read elsewhere, heck, you can read everywhere, about the man's life and accomplishments.  I have a few personal reflections to share - more for myself than for anyone else, which is what Steve himself always encouraged. [1]

As I stopped to reflect upon the life of Steve Jobs, I realized that he was, quite probably, the most important person, tech-wise, to the geeks of my generation, myself included.  Although I'm no Apple "fanboy", and I certainly never worshipped at the "Church of the Mac" [2], I realized, fully, just how much Steve's dreams influenced our dreams...my dreams.

That's what Steve gave us:  the power to fulfill our dreams.  And after giving us that power, he would stand on that stage in that black mock turtleneck and challenge us to use that power.  He would practically dare us to go do something great.  And many of us geeks did.

I can still remember vividly the first time I saw an Apple ][.  It was at a small college where my father worked.  I must have been about 11.  I had heard about "personal computers," but this was the first time I had seen one.  It drove me crazy because I couldn't touch it.  I watched the students making that piece-of-magic-in-a-box plot sine wave graphs and I thought, wow you could make that thing do just about anything.  Steve Jobs, through that beautiful logo [3] whispered, I dare you.

The first time I touched one was in a computer store.  We couldn't afford one, they were $1,200 in 1980, but I would sit there and make whatever little programs I knew (from reading computer magazines without even owning a computer) when the salespeople weren't looking.  I dare you.

Eventually, I got my own PC.  Not an Apple (again $1,200 in 1980), but one that was "good enough."  Good enough because where Steve went, the rest of us companies and geeks followed.  As I stayed up that first night, metaphorically typing let there be light and watching that little machine make worlds come to life...there he was...I dare you.

Even today, at FASO, as we work on our iPhone app [4] and conceptualize our iPad strategy we hear it:  I dare you.  Do you think three years ago I planned to be thinking about a tablet strategy?  Steve Jobs knew I would be.  He knew we all would be.

So again I realize, Steve gave us the power to fulfill dreams.  Not by incrementally improving technology.  No.  He led us by dragging the rest of us to where we should be.  We will all miss him for that reason.  I hope the next leader of tech pushes us as hard as he did.

The rest of us geeks follow his lead by attempting to give even more people the power to fulfill their dreams.  We, the software craftsmen,  built our art - all the great tools and apps available to you today - on top of the vision he created.

And that's what FASO is - or at least, strives to be:  the power for artists to fulfill their dreams of sharing their art...sharing beautiful art with a world that desperately needs more beauty.

So, even as I share our mantra, "Sharing Art Enriches Life", with you I realize that it's all connected.  Look how much Steve's willingness to share his art has enriched all of our lives.

Sharing Art Enriches Life indeed.  Why don't you share yours?

I dare you.
